Recent Tragedies Highlight the Importance of Securing Flat-Panel TVs

According to this troubling story in yesterday’s Chicago Tribune, two Chicago-area toddlers have been killed in the past three weeks when TVs have fallen off of furniture and crashed down on them.  The article examines these recent deaths and also reveals telling statistics from a recent report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on furniture related accidents.

A snapshot from the report includes:

  • From 2008-2010, injuries related to instability of television, furniture, appliances averaged 43,400 per year, 58% which involved children under the age of 18.
  • 19,200 (44%) of accidents involved televisions (or TV and furniture) falling.
  • In the past decade, 293 of these accidents resulted in deaths, of which 245 (or 84%) involved children under the age of 8.
In light of these tragic accidents and statistics, it is more important than ever to make sure your TVs are mounted to the wall or at a minimum, secured to the furniture with a product like the SANUS ELM701 Anti-Tip Strap. Designed to reduce the risk of TVs or furniture accidentally tipping, the ELM701 Anti-Tip Strap features a durable, shock-resistant, polypropylene strap that securely connects in for places: twice to the back of the TV, once to the back of furniture and once to the wall. The strap’s universal design works with nearly all TVs up to 60.”
